Our Favorite Dive on Bonaire (And What Made It Unforgettable)

Stunning underwater scene of a colorful coral reef with a school of fish in West Papua, Indonesia.

There’s a reason Bonaire is called the shore diving capital of the world — but even among its 80+ marked dive sites, one stands out to us like a glowing reef fish in a school of grey: 1000 Steps.

A Dive That Started It All

We remember our first dive at 1000 Steps like it was yesterday. Carrying gear down the iconic limestone stairs felt like a rite of passage. And when we surfaced from that dive, salty and grinning, we knew: we’d fallen in love with Bonaire.

What Makes 1000 Steps So Special

First, the entry. Yes, it’s a bit of a workout hauling tanks up and down (pro tip: go light and slow). But the stairs open up to a breathtaking vista that feels like a postcard. The reef here starts close to shore, meaning you don’t waste air just getting to the good stuff.

The Reef Life

Expect schools of blue tang, towering coral pillars, and a healthy scattering of turtles. The visibility is usually excellent, and because this site is a bit trickier to access, it’s often less crowded than easier entries nearby.

We once had a curious green sea turtle follow us for ten minutes, nibbling at sponges and peeking into our bubbles. It’s still our favorite underwater encounter.

Tips for Diving 1000 Steps

  • Arrive early for easier parking and to avoid midday heat on the stairs.
  • Wear booties — the entry and exit can be rocky.
  • Double check gear before heading down. It’s a tough trip back up if you forget something.
  • Snorkelers welcome! Even from the surface, the marine life is rich.

Would We Do It Again?

Absolutely. We revisit 1000 Steps every trip. It’s where we recommend friends go when they ask, “What’s the one dive I can’t miss on Bonaire?”

And now we’re telling you, too.
