7 Things We Wish We Knew Before Our First Trip to Bonaire

Bonaire is paradise, no doubt — but even paradise has quirks. Here are the 7 things we really wish someone had told us before our first visit. Consider this your shortcut to a smoother trip.

1. Car Rentals Are Essential (And Go Fast)

You can’t Uber, and walking is rarely practical in the heat. A rental truck isn’t just handy — it’s how you reach most dive sites and explore freely. Book early, especially in high season.

2. Restaurants Close Early (And Sometimes Randomly)

Many kitchens shut by 9 PM, and a few close altogether a couple days a week. Check hours in advance — or risk a sad, hungry stroll through Kralendijk. Pro tip: keep snacks in your room.

3. You Can’t Use Regular Sunscreen

To protect coral reefs, Bonaire only allows reef-safe sunscreen. You can buy it locally, but it’s pricier. Pack your own (zinc-based, no oxybenzone) before you fly.

4. Dive Shops Keep Island Time

Most operators are friendly and professional, but don’t expect mainland efficiency. Slow pace is part of the charm — just build in buffer time for rentals, fills, and scheduling.

5. It’s Windy. Like, Constantly.

That trade wind keeps bugs down and temperatures comfortable, but it can also mean choppy water and sandy meals. Don’t bring a beach umbrella. Do bring clips for your towel.

6. Grocery Shopping Can Be… an Adventure

Markets are well-stocked but imports vary. If you’re picky about coffee, peanut butter, or snacks, bring your favorites. (And yes, you can drink the tap water — it’s excellent.)

7. Shore Diving is as Amazing as Everyone Says

We underestimated how easy and incredible it is to dive right from the beach. No boat rides, no crowds, just tank up and go. It changed how we plan every trip now.
